Not Loving New York So Much

Because the ban on hydrofracking has been lifted just as the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the agency that will have to monitor this controversial natural gas drilling technique, is slated to lose another 321 jobs. All while the New York Times is being attacked for pointing out that people in the gas industry are calling shale gas extraction a "giant Ponzi scheme."

V.S. Naipaul is a Sexist

V.S. Naipaul is also a great writer, and one whose fiction and nonfiction I have read and reread over the years. A great human being? Not so much, and does that matter? Ta-Nehisi Coates posted a comment by "Hilzoy" on the writer and the man:

"It would be a mistake not to read Naipaul. He's a gorgeous, gorgeous writer. . . he's also one of the best examples around of someone who is (imho) deeply worth reading, but whose treatment of both women and blacks (esp. blacks outside Africa) is just horrific."

Read the whole post, which sums up my own views.

Seed Trilogy Available in E-Formats

My novels Earthseed, Farseed, and Seed Seeker are now available in electronic formats for Kindles, Nooks, and all e-readers, and I recommend that readers order them through the Web site of Flights of Fantasy, our local sf and fantasy bookstore. Another local independent bookstore now offering e-editions is The Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza. Help keep an indie bookstore in business!
